This field trip will discuss the good, bad and ugly of urban stream restoration. In the late 1970s, Reay Creek was a garbage dump in a ravine. Restoration by Sidney Parks and the Sidney Anglers has resulted in vibrant Coho runs and a healthy creek environment—so healthy that wild cutthroat trout regularly utilize the creek for spawning and juvenile rearing. Unfortunately, accidental spills of cadmium (2003, 2004) from the airport resulted in massive fish kills in the creek, from which the creek is still recovering. Learn how the Victoria Airport Authority has responded to this challenge. |

TenTen Creek flows through the Victoria Airport property. This tour will talk about the challenges of restoration of a severely degraded stream that once was known as a great Coho stream by local First Nations.
TenTen Creek has been subject to many challenges over the years. Wartime use of the area for an airfield converted much of the lower part of the creek, also known as Airport Creek or West Creek. TenTen estuary was filled in first as a railway terminal, then for seaplane hangers, and is now the Institute of Ocean Sciences. Upper watershed sections of the creek were modified for farming and later a golf course. Pollution from local farming is mitigated by constructed wetlands located on airport property. |
