Projects and Programs

Hagan/Kennes Watershed, including Graham Creek

Over the last 9 years, the Hagan Creek Watershed Project has been undertaking in-stream restoration, education and outreach programs for Hagan and Graham Creeks. Replanting, fencing, and in-stream complexing have been underway in Centennial Park and lower Hagan creek. Watershed assessments of impervious surface coverage, watershed planning and stormwater and water quality monitoring are a few of the project activities.

This year we have seen a considerable revival of the Hagan Creek Project Steering Committee. A new work plan has included volunteers working on measuring water quality, planting the lower Hagan Creek riparian zone and ‘tuning’ up Graham Creek in Centennial Park. The Steering Committee meets regularly and is looking for members and new ideas! The District of Central Saanich will be undertaking an Integrated Stormwater Management Planning (ISMP) process in 2006!

Storm Water Pollution

Following through on work begun in 1998 in Centennial Park, the Hagan group has re-established their partnership with the District of Central Saanich. Their efforts have been focused on upstream sources of storm water pollution. Businesses in the Keating Industrial Park on the Graham Creek side of the watershed were inventoried, contacted and surveyed on their stormwater habits. Water quality monitoring by Peninsula Streams Society helped tremendously in illustrating the problem for survey respondents. Water quality testing continues in the industrial area and throughout the watershed.

Backgrounder

The Hagan-Graham Watershed is one of the largest on the Saanich Peninsula, spanning almost all of the Municipality of Central Saanich. The watershed is made up of two streams: Hagan Creek and Graham Creek. Hagan Creek has several small tributaries and originates in the north from Mt. Newton.  Graham Creek originates just south of the Central Saanich border in the area between West Saanich Road and Old West Saanich Road.

The Hagan-Graham Watershed is impacted by a variety of human uses including, industry and agriculture.  Of particular concern is the pollution entering the watershed through the storm drain system. Consistently high pollution levels, including heavy metals, hydrocarbons and fecal coliforms, have been measured near storm drains in the Keating Industrial area.

Several restoration projects have been completed in the lower Hagan-Graham Watershed.  There are also projects planned for the future in the area.
